Dear Bunchkin,
A few months ago, you and I had a talk about what it means to be “loving and serving.” I’d been noticing an increasing tendency for you to take the last bite, or the best plate, and rarely volunteer to help anyone when they asked. We spoke for a little while and I gave [...]

Today I was visiting a new blog I recently discovered, which is fast becoming one of my favorites, and found a link to a beautiful article that has been in my mind all day long. Click here to read something that, if you’re a mother, I doubt you’ll never forget.

People often ask us how we’re going to prepare our children for “real life” if they’re being home schooled and “sheltered” from the world. I once read a book that answered this question beautifully and today I finally got around to checking it out again. I’d like to share it here, in hopes it might [...]

I love living out in the country, and I love how many wonderful people there are to meet, and how supportive everyone is. Last week, I had four different people helping me with my 9 month olds diaper rash (I had no idea that diaper rash is often caused by yeast!) And last week, when I [...]

Yesterday, I wrote about my three-year-olds embarrassing trip to the grocery. I mentioned that she was wearing her four-year-old sisters dress and her five-year-old sisters pants. And somehow I managed to give the incorrect ages for all three of them! My “THREE-year-old” is actually FOUR years old, my “FOUR-year-old” is actually FIVE year old and… well, you get [...]

The other day, my oldest daughter came to me and said: “Momma, you must really want a lot of friends.”  I asked her what she meant, and she replied: “Well, you must want a lot of friends to want so many children.”
That really says it all!

Goo Goose has had a diaper rash for a little while now and none of our creams or powders have been working against it. So yesterday I searched through my baby healthcare book and found this no-fail remedy:
“The child should be allowed to go without a diaper to permit drying of the area whenever possible.”
Okay, so [...]

The following conversation took place between Daddy and Bitty the other day:

“Abba, there’s a lot of nails in the back of the van!” Bitty said, excitedly.
Daddy replied, “Bitty, those aren’t nails, they’re golf tee’s.”
“Oh,” said Bitty. “Can I pick them up?”
“Yes.”
A few second later, Bitty called out: “Abba, look at all the nails I’ve got!”
Daddy replied again, “those [...]

Bundle started to throw up late last night and has continued through the day today.  (  She doesn’t have a fever and is otherwise feeling well, but just can’t keep anything down.  Bunchkin appointed herself Bundle’s official caretaker this morning and all day she has been fetching water, wet washcloths, extra covers, etc. and has run to [...]

Its a wonder our chickens ever lay eggs. Aside from the sheer physical exhaustion, I wonder about the emotional trauma that must result from being chased around the yard for hours by four young children.
The kids have become somewhat expert at catching these chickens. They know how to work as a team, driving the hens [...]

A little while ago, my four year old came running into the kitchen to tell me:
“Momma, I found a big HUGE booger under my arm!”
It took me a second to process that.
As if that weren’t disconcerting enough, she continued, saying:
“But I didn’t eat it. I just wiped in on my dress. ’Cause I didn’t want [...]

I’m feeling reflective today. I just watched a video that touched me deeply and I hope that you will take the time to watch it as well:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=th6Njr-qkq0These words, from the video, spoke to my heart:

“We feed you every three hours, and it takes us an hour and a half to do it. We’ve loved learning [...]

People often ask me how I’m ever able to get anything done with five children ages six and under. The truth is that getting things done is becoming increasingly easier as the children get older and are able to help around the house more. What is becoming increasingly difficult, however, is carrying on a conversation. [...]

The children sometimes ask spiritual questions that leave Jon and I at a loss over how to respond. Such as Bunchkin asking over breakfast: “When Jesus comes into your heart, does He stand up or does He sit down?”

As mentioned in my last post, we have been blessed with another cat and poor Bitty is just desperate to pet her (or him? I still haven’t checked.) But she hasn’t yet touched the cat, and will not touch the cat, until I deem her mature enough to handle this kitten without causing any serious [...]

Our dog brought us a stray kitten the other day. We think she’s been hanging around the house for a while, because we’ve been hearing her cry but couldn’t find her. The dog brought her out of hiding and the kids have already become attached to her (actually, it might be a “him,” I haven‘t [...]

The kids have been very interested in tornado’s lately, asking me questions about them regularly. “Does the fan spin as fast as a tornado?” “Are tornados as loud as trains?” Although I try to answer their questions with accuracy and adequacy, I’m still not certain they understand exactly what a tornado is. Last night, after spinning [...]

Here is a typical evening in the Ricketts home. Last night, after changing two diapers, putting pull-ups on two of the girls, feeding the baby his oatmeal, and brushing four sets of teeth, the kids were ready for bed. We got them in their beds, told them not to get up any more, and this is [...]

I gave Sugar Boo and Bundle haircuts today. I’ve been doing it since Boo was old enough for his first haircut and to be honest, I’m not getting any better at it. With the girls, it’s not too bad. Just cut in a straight line all the way around, eleven or twelve times until it’s finally even. [...]

Sea For Sale?

Today the kids were looking at pictures of things they wanted to get with their allowance money. Seeing a picture of the ocean, Sugar Boo told his sisters that this was what he wanted to buy. Bundle responded:
“Sugar, you can’t buy the ocean because it’s too heavy. And even if it wasn’t, you couldn’t get it [...]
